Double Glazing Sash Windows in a Nottingham Listed Building

Brown’s Sash Windows Restorations was recently commissioned to upgrade the sash windows of a British listed building in Nottingham city centre.

Listed buildings often retain their original timber windows, which form an important part of their historic character. The aim of this project was to improve comfort and insulation while carefully preserving the traditional appearance of the property.

The Building

This historic listed building in Nottingham city centre featured traditional timber sash windows that had served the property well for many years. However, the original glazing was no longer providing the level of insulation required for modern comfort.

The property owner wanted to achieve several improvements while maintaining the building’s historic appearance:

  • improved thermal efficiency

  • reduced external noise from the busy city centre

  • preservation of the original sash window design

  • improved comfort for occupants

Because the building is listed, it was particularly important that the work maintained the traditional appearance of the windows.

The Work Carried Out

After carefully assessing the windows, we upgraded the existing sash windows by installing discreet double glazed units while preserving the original timber frames.

Our work included:

  • carefully removing and preparing the existing sashes

  • installing double glazed units designed for traditional sash windows

  • ensuring the windows remained correctly balanced

  • checking smooth operation throughout the installation

This approach allowed the windows to be upgraded while maintaining their historic proportions and appearance.

The Result

The completed project significantly improved the comfort and performance of the building while retaining the character expected of a listed property.

The building now benefits from:

  • improved insulation and warmth

  • reduced noise from the city centre

  • smoother operation of the sash windows

  • preservation of the original architectural features

Projects like this show how traditional sash windows in listed buildings can often be sympathetically upgraded without replacing the original frames.
