The 60-Second Sash Window Health Check

Take this checklist to your window. Most “failed” windows are 80% healthy—they just need a specialist’s touch.

1. The “Rattle & Hum” Test

The Action: Gently push the sash from the inside while it’s closed.

The Check: Does it move more than 3mm? Can you hear the wind whistling through?

VERDICT: If yes, your Draught-Proofing has failed. This is the #1 cause of heat loss.

2. The “Screwdriver” Decay Test

The Action: Gently press a screwdriver into the bottom rail or external sill.

The Check: Does the wood feel “spongy”? Does the tool sink in more than 2mm?

VERDICT: This is Active Rot. If caught now, we can splice in new timber and save the frame.

3. The “Smooth Operator” Test

The Action: Open the window fully and let go.

The Check: Does it stay in place? Does it require “brute force” to move?

VERDICT: Your Weights & Pulleys are unbalanced. This is a safety risk and causes frame strain.

4. The “Glazing Bead” Check

The Action: Inspect the putty holding the glass in place.

The Check: Is the putty cracked, falling out, or missing entirely?

VERDICT: Water is entering the timber rebate. Re-puttying is vital preventative medicine.
