    What Are Sash Windows?

Sash windows date back to the 1600s. Part of what has made them a favourite among homeowners to date is their aesthetics and high value.  Throughout the years, sash windows have evolved to become more resilient, durable, and practical. However, what many tend to forget is that it’s not just the advances in energy efficiency, glazing, and UV protection that have played a major role in the evolution of sash windows and other property structures. All these good changes can partly be attributed to many other factors, including the innovations and positive changes in building materials. Most property structures are no longer what they used to be centuries ago, thanks to the advancement in building materials.

What Makes The Sash Window Popular?

The sash window has attributes you won’t easily find in other windows. One of its popular features is the fact that you can replace it from inside without having to scaffold. The other feature is that it’s easy to repair them. That’s what makes other wooden windows like casement and wooden doors popular too. Such repairs can be carried out perfectly and to your satisfaction when you have the help of a qualified sash window specialist like Browns Sash Windows Restorations.

    History

Sash windows originated in Europe in the 13th Century. But their designs only started to gain prominence in the 16th century. They were popular across Europe at the time, despite the simplicity in their design. You could only open and close them horizontally.

It didn’t take long before the window’s popularity spread into Britain. Brits immediately began to manufacture them. They introduced new design features such as the vertically opening option. This was accomplished by drilling a couple of holes down the sides of the window’s frame. Pegs would then be installed to stop slippage, among other issues. With these new design features, the sash window became suitable for different purposes.

But sash windows weren’t without challenges. One that they struggled with the most was an insufficiently strong glass. While the window itself grew strong and more sophisticated with time, the glass panes didn’t. As a result, multiple panes would be used in each sash. One sash would hold up to ten glass panes. Larger panes weren’t as popular as their small counterparts because they were more prone to breakage. Also important to note is that the surfaces within sash windows were devoid of inconsistent and flaws.

Another challenge was the glazing bars. Back then, they were quite thick, large, and conspicuous. Thus, they would eat into the overall aesthetics of the window.

    Edwardian Era

The Edwardian era brought with it new changes that would later revolutionise some of the sash window design elements. For example, glass was made stronger while the glazing bars became relatively less in size and not as apparent and necessary as before. The result of these changes was sash windows with fewer glass panes (not more than two).

Homes that were built during this era embraced ornate details more than anything else. Homeowners preferred to have homes with windows that run from the ceiling all the way down to the floor. It was the most popular request around this time. Because we now had a stronger glass, these requests would easily be met.

Two panes of glass were enough. The top and bottom sashes would hold them well. To make this set up aesthetically appealing, the top sashes would be completed with stained glass.

    Durability

One persistently great feature that sash window designs continue to distinguish themselves with is their durability.  They have always been super durable. With better building materials, this feature has been enhanced, making them one of the most durable windows today.

Even the manufacturers have so much confidence in them that it’s no longer uncommon to see warranties that span over 50 years.

All these developments have made sash windows a worthy property investment. Plenty of homeowners, especially those scouting for profitable home improvement projects, continue to opt for it, listing it among their best property investments.

Proof of the sash window’s durability can be seen at the Ham House in England. The sash windows on this property were fitted in 1670 when the owners, Duke and Duchess Lauderdale, chose to renovate their property. Centuries later, the windows, and the rest of the manor, still look fresh and appealing. Even though a few repairs have been done to the property, the original design and sturdiness have been preserved.

    Environmentally-Friendly

You have probably run into the discussions and debates that touch on the relations between wooden windows and the natural environment. Some homeowners deliberately avoid installing them into their property in favour of the later.

The other side of this debate is that wood windows are in actual fact one of the most environmentally-friendly windows today. Some window designs, like the PVC styles, consume almost 10 times the energy you would use to create wood windows. On top of that, they are ever off-gassing.

That aside, the natural wood used to make wood windows and doors is usually put into maximum use. Even better, we now have technologies, innovations, and techniques that minimise waste. Not to mention that wood can last for centuries, as evident at the Ham House.

What’s more, you can have your wooden windows designed and painted/stained to your liking. That’s what initially made aluminium and vinyl windows special, but wooden windows are now far better when it comes to that, and other stylistic features.
