Sash windows originated in Europe in the 13th Century. But their designs only started to gain prominence in the 16th century. They were popular across Europe at the time, despite the simplicity in their design. You could only open and close them horizontally.
It didn’t take long before the window’s popularity spread into Britain. Brits immediately began to manufacture them. They introduced new design features such as the vertically opening option. This was accomplished by drilling a couple of holes down the sides of the window’s frame. Pegs would then be installed to stop slippage, among other issues.
